Brief History
The Ghana Association of New South Wales started as a students' union in the late 1970s. With the influx of Ghanaians into Australia particularly, Sydney in New South Wales in the early to mid-80s, other non-student Ghanaians joined the union which later became the Ghana Association of New South Wales.
The Association was incorporated in 1989 under the Associations Incorporation Act 1984 as a non-profit community organisation. All Ghanaians and their families are now members. Friends of Ghana are also admitted as members. Currently we estimate the number of Ghanaians and Ghanaian-Australians resident in New South Wales to be about 5,000.
The Association is an umbrella organisation for all Ghanaian ethnic and other social groups, notably; Mfante Mboa Kuo, Asanteman Association, Kwahuman Association, Ewe Norvisi, Northern Brothers, Okyeman Association, Brong-Ahafo Association, Ga Community, Odehe Group.
There are a number of Ghanaian led churches in New South Wales. Namely, The Church of Pentecost, Living Word Centre, Light House Church, All Nations Church and Prayer Ministry, Christian Life Centre International and Ghana Presbyterian Church.
Mission:
The Ghana Association of NSW aims to promote friendship, mutual understanding and co-operation between Ghana and Australia through the establishment of cultural, social and economic relationships. It also aims at assisting in the welfare and settlement needs of members, particularly Ghanaians so that they can integrate into the Australian society as productive residents.
